Immigrants from Other Worlds: Latinos

Of the three most prominent groups of Spanish-speaking migrants to the United States—Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans—only two are immigrant groups. Puerto Ricans (as noted earlier) are American citizens and thus will not be treated extensively here. But because of how the census counts what it now classifies as “Hispanic or Latino” Americans, bf it is necessary for us to glance at the Puerto Rican population living on the mainland. When the census gives data about the Hispanic/Latino population it almost always adds the note that these persons “may be of any race.” This is necessary because Hispanics and Latinos have already been included in the total population under one of the “racial” categories, almost all as either “black or white.” Table 9.1 shows the census tabulation.
